smarterwork: How would you describe your experiences as a smarterwork Expert so far?
Nick Roach: Initially, I was sceptical - now that I fully understand the bidding system, I am quite happy to bid for projects. Bidding is, however, too rigid, with no margin for error, which can mean miscalculations are easier to make. With 15 completed projects so far, I'm beginning to enjoy myself!!
SW: Was it at all different from your previous working practice? If yes, in which way?
NR: Operating internationally has always been a bit of lottery in the past. Now that smarterwork is on the scene, they take much of the worry out of the equation.
SW: What are the pros and cons of working completely online?
NR: Working online is fine, but it can be impersonal. I am a 'hands-on' manager who thrives on contact with clients and my translation team.
SW: How do you think the Internet has affected the translation profession?
NR: Only fundamentally!! Only the best translation companies - that know their own limitations - will survive operating internationally, and SR Translations is going to survive.
SW: Would you recommend other translation agencies to work for smarterwork?
NR: A double-edged question!
Yes - they know the business and can provide valuable additional work, …but…
No - this would only be providing competition where less competition was before. However, smarterwork appear to have their act together and I enjoy working with them.
SW: How do you see the future working practice of translation agencies?
NR: They will have to become much more professional. I know lots of UK translation agencies that have no linguists working on project co-ordination. Bad for the client and bad for the translation team.
