smarterwork: Could you tell us about your company and your role in it?

Martin Lloyd: HUGIN utilises the Internet to distribute financial information (press releases and so on) from plc's to shareholders. I am responsible for sales of our services to the plc's. We are keen to offer customised solutions to companies.

SW: What would you say are the advantages to Hugin of using freelancers and contractors?

ML: It would be too expensive to maintain the resources in house to deliver a range of individualised solutions. smarterwork offers the opportunity to utilise the appropriate expertise for the period it is required.

SW: What do you personally look for in a freelancer?

ML: Speed, professionalism, flexibility, high quality service

SW: What changes do you anticipate in the employer-employee relationship in the next five years?

ML: Greater employee flexibility, more telecommuting, use of hot desking, other remote working practices, flatter structures within organisations-more employee responsibility for own career, more virtual networked organisations working on individual projects, more consultancy

SW: What advice would you offer other employers looking to outsource some of their work?

ML: The hackneyed phrase - 'Stick to your knitting' is still relevant. Just do what you do best and outsource expertise for projects outside your specific field. Utilise the Internet to gain maximum cost savings - it's a competitive global market for freelancers - there are inevitable cost savings to be gained for companies

SW: What kind of project(s) have you had completed at smarterwork?

ML: Website development and a brochure design.

SW: What was your experience like using a remote-service provider such as smarterwork?

ML: I have used non-UK experts and have only had positive results. I've delivered better results at a lower cost by utilising the smarterwork market place.

SW: Is this something you could see developing more in the future?
